Sonamoo, G-Friend boost hopes for new K-pop stars
By Lim Jeong-yeo
Rookie groups Sonamoo and G-Friend are raising hopes for a new generation of girl groups.
Sonamoo and G-Friend are trying to differentiate themselves from other girl groups, especially in terms of the style of music used by Wonder Girls and Girls’ Generation.

The septet Sonamoo relies on a strong hip-hop beat and charismatic dance, while sextet G-Friend mix strong dance routines with girlish lyrics.
The two rookies debuted less than half a month apart, forming a sort of rivalry and reminding some fans of the early days of Wonder Girls and Girls’ Generation.
Upon release, Sonamoo’s “Deja Vu” ranked No. 1 on China’s biggest video website Yinyuetai in the Korean music video category.
G-Friend’s “Glass Bead” garnered 1 million YouTube views in 10 days. The band also made it to the Top 10 in several music charts, a rare feat for a rookie group.
